James Lovett
TMP Volunteer
"I began volunteering at The Matthew Project just over 2 years ago to coincide with the studying of my psychology degree and my counselling diploma, and the experience has re-affirmed my desire to work with people.
The Matthew Project has nurtured me throughout this journey, taking me from a shy volunteer who simply wanted to support the groups, to being able to offer empathic telephone support during the COVID-19 lockdowns, help with writing letters on behalf of members to housing, assist in assessments and deliver my own group sessions. I have been delivering sessions on existentialism, exploring the member's circumstances and available choices.
I feel the experience and opportunities which The Matthew Project has provided, has been equally as valuable as my academic studies. My confidence to work practically with people has grown thanks to The Matthew Project. I have always felt involved with the organization, staff and members and there is a sense of community here which creates a positive environment to work in, and a healing quality for the group members.
During my time at The Matthew Project I have seen individuals grow immensely in regard to their recovery, as well as personally and spiritually. Many of the members will comment how they have been through a variety of different services, however, the level of care, sense of community, programs and lessons they find at The Matthew Project is unmatched. Overall, The Matthew Project has been investing positively in volunteers and members alike, something I myself have been lucky enough to experience and witness."
