Read below to hear how our Recovery Support Programme members benefit from their time in the kitchen at DINE events
Why did you decide to support The Matthew Project at a catering event?
I was asked to come along and I thought with the limited knowledge of cooking I have, I thought it a great opportunity to get involved.
What worries did you have about the event beforehand?
I was a little bit concerned about what might be expected of me but that soon changed once I was shown what to do.

Did you enjoy taking part?
150% yes. Would love to do it again.

Did you feel well supported by the chefs and the rest of the team?
Yes. I was put at ease all the way through with explanations about what to do.

Would you recommend taking part to other members?
Definitely. Because we were busy and enjoying ourselves, the time just flew by.

What did you most enjoy about being on the team at DINE?
The whole experience!
What can you take away from the experience?
I’ve gained experience in working in the kitchen and I’d happily consider trying to carry it on in a restaurant. I’m going to buy myself a smoker and try smoking my own meat at home.

Why did you decide to support The Matthew Project at a catering event?
I am good in the kitchen as a qualified chef. I wanted to spend some time with people in the kitchen – it’s always felt like home, I’m happy in the kitchen. Knowing that what I did was for a good cause made it worthwhile.

What worries did you have about the event beforehand?
I was worried about what would be expected of me and whether I would be of any actual use. It’s a new concept for me, but I was looking forward to it as much as I was anxious.
Did you enjoy taking part?
Absolutely. It was an amazing event that came to fruition through teamwork and a very relaxed environment for me to explore being back in a kitchen.

Did you feel well supported by the chefs and the rest of the team?
Yes, I did feel absolutely well supported. The chef was very calm, open minded and understanding of my current situation. Know that I was struggling he was on hand immediately. He was innovative and his menu was incredibly well thought through.

Would you recommend taking part to other members?
Yes, absolutely if not for the love of food, then for the sense of belonging and community.

What did you most enjoy about being on the team at DINE?
Being on the team! I felt like I was actually part of the team as opposed to a prop. I enjoyed sharing my passion with food. And it was great to spend time with people from the centre outside of the usual setting, getting to know them better.

What can you take away from the experience?
It was informative skills wise. I’ve seen there is still a way for me to go back out there, feeling hopeful for my future.
